Recording a ride
Start, pause and stop a ride, what TrottOn records, and where to find your ride history.
Before your first ride
- Add at least one horse (see Horse profiles). You cannot start a ride without choosing a horse.
- Allow location access All the time. TrottOn needs it to keep recording when your screen is locked. If it is not allowed, the app asks you to open Settings and choose "Allow all the time", and the ride does not start until you do.
Start a ride
- On the map, tap Ride.
- In Select Your Horse, choose the horse or horses you are riding.
- Choose whether to show your horse on the public map for this ride (other riders can then see your location while you ride), and whether you want audio cues.
- Tap Start Ride.
During the ride
The panel at the bottom of the map shows distance, duration, speed, average speed and your current gait. Tap Pause and Resume as you need. If you turn on Auto-Pause in Settings, recording pauses when you stop moving.
Stop and save
Tap Stop Ride. The ride is saved straight away, with no extra question, so only tap it when you have finished.
What is recorded
- Your route on the map, distance, time and speed.
- Time in each gait (halt, walk, trot, canter and gallop) and the number of transitions. The ride report says whether this came from the phone's motion sensors and GPS or from GPS speed alone.
- Estimated workload: a simple estimate based on time in each gait and the height you climbed. It is a guide to how much work the ride was, not a measure of how your horse feels.
Photos you take during a ride stay on your phone for the ride summary. Saving ride photos to your ride history is coming soon.
No signal? No problem
Your ride is stored on your phone as you go. If it cannot upload when you stop, TrottOn tries again when you are back online. If the app is closed in the middle of a ride, the next time you open it you can choose Resume ride, Finish & save or Discard ride.
