A good farrier is one of the most important people in your horse's life. Here is how to find and work with one in and around Guildford, Surrey.
We do not list any farriers for Guildford on this page yet. This is a guide to help you choose, written for riders anywhere in England.
Check the register first
In Great Britain, the law says only a farrier registered with the Farriers Registration Council may shoe a horse, apart from narrow exceptions such as emergency first aid and apprentices training under supervision. You can check any farrier's name on the public register. Search the Farriers Registration Council register.
How often
Many horses are trimmed or shod every five to eight weeks, but the right interval depends on your horse's feet, workload and the time of year. Ask your farrier what they recommend and book the next visit before they leave.
Questions to ask
- Do you cover my yard, and is there a call-out charge?
- What do you charge for a trim, a full set and a remove-and-replace?
- How much notice do you need, and how do you handle a lost shoe?
- Will you work alongside my vet if my horse has a lameness or hoof problem?
Being ready for the visit
- A clean, dry, level and well-lit space to work, out of the wind and rain.
- Your horse caught, with clean, dry legs and feet.
- Someone to hold your horse if your farrier asks.
